Choosing living room furniture

Living room furniture is the hardest category to buy from photographs, because the two things that decide whether you will be happy — scale and fabric — are the two things a photograph distorts. A three-seater shot in a large showroom reads compact; the same piece against a twelve-foot lounge wall does not. So the useful order is the opposite of the usual one: measure your room first, then look at designs that can actually fit it, and only then ask what they cost.

Start with the wall. Measure the run the sofa will sit against and subtract at least 15 cm at each end, or the piece will look wedged in even if it technically fits. Then measure the route: the street door, the room door, the tightest turn on the stairs and the internal dimensions of the lift if there is one. A sofa that fits the room but not the stairwell is the most expensive mistake in this category, and it takes five minutes to rule out.

Seat depth decides comfort more than any other number. A deep seat, around 60 cm and over, suits lounging and taller sitters but is harder to get out of and eats floor space. A shallower seat is better for upright sitting, smaller frames and older knees. Neither is better in the abstract — but it is worth deciding which you want before you look at pictures, because a photograph will not tell you.

Seat count is a guide, not a specification. Three adults sitting comfortably need more width than three cushions imply, so compare total seat width rather than the number of cushions when you are choosing between models. For an L-shape or a corner sectional, decide early which wall the long run goes against: layouts are handed, and the wrong hand is not something that can be fixed on delivery day.

Upholstery is the other thing a screen cannot settle. Leather grade, fabric weave and the colours actually in stock all change between batches, and colour on a screen is never exact. If the finish matters to you, the showroom visit is worth the trip — and it is worth asking us first which of the designs you have shortlisted can currently be seen there.

Where a listing shows a price, it is the figure confirmed on the date printed with it. Furniture prices in Islamabad and Rawalpindi move with material costs, so treat it as a guide: send the model name and SKU from any product page on WhatsApp and we will confirm the current price, the sizes and finishes available now, and whether the design can be viewed at the showroom before you commit.
