Choosing bedroom furniture

A bedroom is bought around one measurement that most people get wrong: the mattress. Measure across your actual mattress rather than reading the size off its label — Pakistani, imported and older local mattresses in the same nominal size can differ by several centimetres, and a frame sized to the label will either grip the mattress or leave a gap along one side. The second measurement is the walking space. A bed that fits the room on paper can still leave you turning sideways to pass the wardrobe. Aim for at least 60 cm on the sides you use and 75 cm in front of a wardrobe door so it can open fully with someone standing there. If the room is tight, a frame with a lower or slimmer footboard usually buys back more usable space than dropping a size.

Headboard height matters more than it looks. A tall headboard changes what will fit above the bed, so if the bed sits under a window, a shelf or an air-conditioning unit, measure from the top of your mattress to the underside of that obstruction and give us the figure. It is the single most common reason a bed has to be swapped after delivery.

For wardrobes, the depth is the number to check first. Anything under about 55 cm internal depth will not take a coat hanger square-on, which turns the whole rail into a side-hung compromise. Also check ceiling height against the wardrobe height plus the clearance needed to stand it upright — a unit that fits the wall may not be able to be raised into position in a room with a low ceiling.

Upholstered beds are chosen on fabric and colour, and both are the parts a screen handles worst. Fabric batches change, and a shade that reads warm in a photograph often reads cooler in daylight.
