Choosing office furniture

A desk is bought on three numbers, and only one of them is the width. Desk height decides whether it can be used all day: around 74 cm suits most adults with a standard chair, and a surface much above that forces the shoulders up within an hour. Legroom depth decides whether you can sit square to it. Width decides only how much you can spread out, which is the number most listings lead with and the least important of the three.

Measure the wall run or alcove before looking at anything. Include the skirting, any radiator or air-conditioning unit, and the swing of a door if the desk sits near one. Then add the chair: a desk pushed against a wall still needs about 90 cm of clear floor behind it for a chair to be pulled back and sat in without hitting anything.

For a study table for a child or a student, prioritise legroom and a top deep enough for a laptop plus an open notebook — around 60 cm. A shallower top forces the screen too close, which is the main reason a study desk stops being used. Where the desk will be shared or grown into, a plain rectangular top outlasts a fitted one with pigeonholes sized to a particular age.

Multi-position desking is quoted by the run rather than by the unit. Meeting and boardroom tables are sized to the room and the seat count together. Allow about 75 cm of table edge per seat and at least a metre of clear floor around the whole table so chairs can be pushed back and people can pass behind them. In a room under about 4 metres wide, a round or oval top usually works better than a rectangular one at the same seat count.
