Choosing outdoor furniture

Outdoor furniture in Islamabad has to survive a genuinely hard year: forty-degree summer sun, a monsoon, and dust for most of the months in between. That combination, not the look, is what should decide the material — and it is worth being honest about how much shade the space actually gets, because a set that lives under a covered terrace and a set that stands on an open lawn are not the same purchase.

Natural rattan and untreated cane belong under cover. In direct sun they dry, fade and split within a season or two. All-weather synthetic rattan over an aluminium or powder-coated steel frame handles exposure far better and does not rust, which matters more here than weight does. Ask us what a given design is actually made of rather than judging from the photograph — woven finishes look alike and wear very differently.

Timber outdoors needs a decision, not a hope. Some species weather to a silver-grey and are perfectly sound underneath; others need oiling once or twice a year to stay serviceable. Neither is wrong, but choose knowing which one you have signed up for, and ask which treatment a piece has been given before it reaches you.

Cushions are the part that fails first and the part nobody plans for. Decide before you buy where they will live when it rains — a box, a covered corner, indoors — because a cushion left out through one monsoon is finished. Removable covers that can be washed are worth asking about specifically, as is whether replacement covers can be supplied later.

Measure the terrace, the lawn or the balcony including the route out to it. Outdoor sets are often delivered assembled and are wider than they look, and a garden reached only through a house has the same doorway and stair-turn constraints as any room. A lounger in particular is long: check that it can turn the corner into the space before it arrives.
